Bill Bryson nous raconte comment il s'est lancé le défi de parcourir l'Appalachian Trail. Accompagné d'un vieil ami, Stephen Katz, qui n'a pas du tout le profil du sportif, le voilà parti sur les sentiers hostiles. C'est leurs aventures que l'écrivain de voyage nous rapporte avec un humour désopilant. J'ai lu ce livre en anglais et j'ai été captivée par ce récit de randonnée grâce à la prose hilarante de Bill Bryson mais également grâce à ses recherches sur l'histoire de l'Appalachian trail, sa faune et sa flore. En effet, quand l'écrivain s'embarque dans une aventure, il se renseigne énormément et nous livre ainsi un livre très fouillé et passionnant. Par ailleurs, il arrive à récréer pour nous l'atmosphère des sentiers tout en leur donnant de la couleur et du relief au figuré bien-sûr car ils en ont déjà bien assez au sens propre. Un excellent livre très sympathique.

Bill Bryson tells us how he set himself the challenge of walking the Appalachian Trail. Accompanied by an old friend, Stephen Katz, who is not at all the sportsman type, he set off on the hostile trails. The travel writer recounts their adventures with hilarious humour. I was captivated by this account of a hike, thanks not only to Bill Bryson's hilarious prose but also to his research into the history of the Appalachian Trail and its flora and fauna. Indeed, when the writer embarks on an adventure, he does an enormous amount of research, resulting in a very thorough and fascinating book. What's more, he manages to recreate the atmosphere of the trails for us, while giving them a lot of flavour. An excellent read!
