Ce que j'en ai pensé

C'est un témoignage vibrant et déchirant que nous livre Parinoush Saniee dans ce roman autobiographique. Le livre commence alors que Massoumeh, le personnage principal de cette histoire, n'est qu'une adolescente. On suit l'évolution de Massoumeh jusqu'à ce qu'elle et ses enfants soient adultes. La vie de Massoumeh, c'est une vie de sacrifices : sacrifice pour et par sa famille, sacrifice pour et par son mari, sacrifice pour et par ses enfants. Cette histoire, c'est l'histoire d'une jeune femme humble. Ce livre n'a pas une visée politique. Il décrit la vie qu'elle a mené d'abord sous le Shah puis sous le gouvernement islamiste sans que la jeune femme ne prenne parti. Elle décrit ce qu'elle a vu, ce qu'elle a entendu, ce qu'elle a ressenti presque en témoin neutre vis-à-vis de la politique iranienne. Elle décrit ce qu'elle a vécu. Ce n'est qu'à la fin que nous comprenons le véritable but de ce roman, que nous comprenons pourquoi l'auteure a pris le risque de publier un roman qui en montrant la réalité ne peut qu'être controversé. Ce livre a d'ailleurs été interdit deux fois en Iran. L'écriture est simple, juste, vraie, bouleversante. Un roman superbe.

Summary

A teenager in pre-revolutionary Tehran, Massoumeh is an average girl, passionate about learning. On her way to school she meets a local man and falls in love, but when her family discover his letters they accuse her of bringing them dishonour. She is badly beaten by her brother, and her parents hastily arrange for her to marry to a man she’s never met. Facing a life without love, and the prospect of no education, Massoumeh is distraught, but a female neighbour urges her to comply: “We each have a destiny, and you can’t fight yours.”

The years that follow Massoumeh’s wedding prove transformative for Iran. Hamid, Massoumeh’s husband, is a political dissident and a threat to the Shah’s oppressive regime. When the secret service arrive to arrest him, it is the start of a terrifying period for Massoumeh. Her fate, so long dictated by family loyalty and tradition, is now tied to the changing fortunes of her country.

My thought

It's a pungent and heartbreaking testimony that Parinoush Saniee delivers in this autobiographic novel. The book begins while Massoumeh, the principal character, is only a teenager. We follow her evolution until she and her children are adults. Massoumeh's life is about sacrifices: sacrifices to and by her family, sacrifices to and by her husband and sacrifices to and by her children. This story is the story of a humble young woman. This book is not about politics. Of course it does talk about it as she describes what she saw, what she felt, what she've been through under the reign of the Shah and then under the islamist government. Because our lives are always different depending on the governments we're under. But the point of view of Massoumeh is a neutral one. She only describes her life as it is. It is not until the very end that we understand why she wrote it, why she took that big risk of publishing it. It surely was going to be controversial as the author showed reality. Indeed, the book was banned twice in Iran. The writing is simple, fair and true. Very shattering. A superb novel.
