Hi everyone! In this post, I’m going to tell you about my trip to the Dolomites in late June and early July. When planning my itinerary, I drew a lot of inspiration from the one suggested by Saltinourhair. Their blog is brilliant for helping you plan trips. But let’s get back to the matter at hand – or rather, back to the mountains.

Histoire / History

The Dolomites are a mountain range in northern Italy. This region was long divided between Italy and the Holy Roman Empire, which explains why Italian and German are both spoken there. Ladin, a language specific to the region, is also spoken there. The Dolomites take their name from dolomite, the carbonate sedimentary rock that makes up the mountains. Dolomite itself owes its name to a French geologist, Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu, who sent a rock sample to one of his colleagues, who honoured him by naming the rock after him. Let’s now close this historical digression so that I can take you on this journey.

Se déplacer / To move around

We arrived in the Dolomites with our own car because it seemed cheaper and easier. Indeed, once there it's the most flexible way to get around.

Se loger / Where to stay?

Our first accommodation was situated quite far to the east in the village of Collalbo. I highly recommend this place – it was spacious, light and cosy, with a fully equipped kitchen and a private terrace. It was a bit of a drive from the various hiking trails (an hour’s drive to go anywhere), but it was such a lovely place! In any case, I’d advise you to book well in advance as accommodation is very, very expensive. It was often recommended to stay in Ortisei for the first part of the trip, but the accommodation there was well beyond our budget.
For the second part of our stay, we stayed in accommodation further to the north-west, in Rasun di Sopra (Gasthof Lechner). This one didn’t have a kitchen. The room was a bit dated, with no fridge or kettle, but it was extremely clean. Breakfast was included, but we were only able to have it two days out of the four as we had to depart early sometimes to go hiking. A lot of people advise to stay in Cortina d'Ampezzo but yet again, it was far too expensive for us.

Quoi emporter? / What to pack?

Make sure you bring:
- Hiking boots (essential on rocky and uneven trails)
- Rainwear, as the weather is unpredictable
- A fleece, as it can get cold quickly at higher altitudes
- Hiking clothes. Decathlon sells merino wool T-shirts, some of which are made in Portugal or Romania, which I really appreciated during my trip to the Dolomites: the fabric is comfortable, breathable and doesn’t retain the smell of sweat. I also packed a very nice top in merinos from Dilling a nordic brand which has quality clothing. I particularly recommend long sleeves to protect you from the sun. As for trousers, I prefer to hike in leggings (Decathlon has some excellent ones in their yoga range).
- A large-capacity water bottle. Always make sure you have enough to keep you hydrated during your hikes.
- Sun cream – essential! I particularly love La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios: it comes in a small bottle that slips easily into a bag, has a pleasant texture that doesn’t leave a greasy finish, the white colour fades quickly when you rub it in, and it doesn’t sting my eyes.
- Snacks. We loved the Nature Valley bars from the Crunchy Variety Pack.

Jour 1 : Alpe di Siusi - Seiser Alm / Day 1: Alpe di Siusi - Seiser Alm

On our first day, we headed to Europe’s largest high-altitude mountain pasture: Alpe di Siusi, also known as Seiser Alm. We parked the car in car park P2 at Compatsch. Remember to book your parking (20€) space in advance (I managed to book mine easily the day before for the following day, but it’s best to book a little further in advance). You’ll then need to arrive there before 9 am. This is because the road leading there is closed during the day to limit traffic. Once you arrive, there are numerous trails starting from Compatsch. We chose to do the Compatsch – Almrosen – Mahlknechthütte – Saltria – Compatsch loop, around 4–5 hours walking in total. The walk isn’t particularly difficult, apart from the elevation gain. If you enjoy cycling, some of the routes are perfectly suitable for bikes. The Alpe di Siusi is stunning, with its meadows dotted with wildflowers and surrounded by magnificent mountains. The place has a peaceful, idyllic atmosphere.

For lunch, I recommend stopping off at the Rauchhütte. The view is absolutely magnificent, the dishes are delicious and beautifully presented.

Absolument magnifique.

After our hike, we went to lago di Carezza. Go to P2 parking which is free for two hours and only ten minutes away from the lake by foot. This lake is truly magical with its turquoise waters. Magnificent!

Jour 2 : Sentier Adolf Munkel / Day 2: Adolf Munkel's trail

For our second day, I’d been torn between exploring Seceda, an iconic spot in the Dolomites, and walking the Adolf Munkel trail at the foot of the Odle. It turns out that to get to Seceda, you have to take the cable car from Ortisei, which costs €74 per person, and this also means parking your car in a car park that charges €2.50 per 30 minutes, with a maximum of €30 per day. Faced with these eye-watering prices, we decided instead to go for a hike along the Adolf Munkel trail. The car park costs ‘only’ €10. It is however advised to arrive early, before 8 am, to have a space to park. The hike climbs through the woodland before skirting the Odle – a stunning mountain range – and leads to a mountain hut called Geisler Alm, where I highly recommend stopping for a bite to eat. We had a Kaiserschmarrn there – an Austro-Hungarian speciality – which is a sort of crumbled pancake that tastes a bit like French toast, served here with cranberry and apple jams – a real treat! We also noticed that the goulash smelled absolutely delicious, and they were serving a very appetising traditional dish consisting of potatoes topped with grilled speck and eggs.

We then popped over to have a look at the Church of San Giovanni, which makes for some lovely photos. However, once again, there’s a charge for parking (€10!), which, in my opinion, isn’t worth it.

Jour 3 : Col Sella / Day 3: Sella Pass

We started by parking at the Sella Pass car park (€4/hour for the first 3 hours, then €2/hour) before walking for about 45 minutes to the Friedrich August rifugio. It’s a tough climb to get there, but the views are well worth the effort and, once you reach the top, the mountain hut with its famous filled doughnuts offers a much-appreciated treat. I particularly recommend the cream-filled doughnuts topped with Nutella. The dough itself isn’t anything to write home about, but the combination of cream and Nutella is a real treat.

We then headed back down to take the path leading to the Comici refugio. The walk (1½ to 2 hours there and back) is very pleasant and begins with a path winding its way between magnificent boulders, around which wildflowers grow, with the mountains as a backdrop. It’s stunning. I would recommend, however, that you bring a packed lunch. We tried the Comici refuge, but the food isn’t anything special and the prices are exorbitant. In the afternoon, we’d planned to go to the Gardena Pass, but a storm broke out and it started pouring with rain, so we headed straight to our second accommodation in the Dolomites instead.

Jour 4 : Lac de Sorapiss / Day 4: Lago di Sorapiss

After an early start, we headed to Passo Tre Croci. I’d recommend arriving before 8 am to secure a space in the pay-and-display car park without any trouble (€10, I believe). If you arrive even earlier, you might be able to park along the road for free. There are a few spaces, but they’re snapped up very early. We then took trail 215, which leads to Lake Sorapiss. The hike is quite challenging: the outward journey is almost entirely uphill, with rocky sections where you have to scramble a bit, and some parts of the trail are right on the edge of the precipice, although it’s still manageable if you’re not too afraid of heights. Arriving early also means you can make the ascent without feeling rushed, as this trail is very (very) busy.

Once you reach the top, you’ll come out onto a lake of an absolutely stunning azure blue colour, set against a backdrop of grey mountains. You can walk round the lake (again, the terrain is rugged) in about 1½ hours. The Rifugio Vandelli is recommended for lunch. We arrived when the kitchen wasn’t open yet, and we didn’t want to wait too long as the tables are in full sun and there’s no shade at all. So we tried their snack menu instead. The sandwiches (bread and salsiccio) aren’t great. We tried a cheesecake, though, which wasn’t bad. I’d therefore recommend either having a drink and a dessert from the snack bar for breakfast before heading back down to have lunch elsewhere, or waiting for lunch by the lake – but bear in mind that the tables at the refuge are in full sun... The return journey downhill was easier for me (I struggle on the way up). However, there were loads of people coming the other way. The path is narrow, though, and it seemed a bit dangerous to me with so many people about. It really does pay to arrive early to avoid the crowds!

As it was still early when we finished our hike, we went to Dobbiaco lake. There again a pay-and-display parking. The lake is beautiful with a serene at
mosphere. We stopped at Seerestaurant where we had roasted chicken and chips with a magnificent view on the lake.

Jour 5 : Tre Cime / Day 5: Tre Cime

The most famous hike in the Dolomites is the Tre Cime loop. If you’re planning to do this loop, bear in mind that you’ll need to book a parking space at least a month in advance on the auronzo.info website. When I discovered a few days beforehand that there were no spaces left, I was devastated. As the Tre Cime is one of the Dolomites’ most iconic views, I didn’t want to miss it. I tried to find other ways to get to the start of the loop, but even the shuttle bus from Dobbiaco to the Tre Cime was fully booked. I finally found an alternative thanks to ChatGPT. We set off early again (to arrive around 7.30 am) for the Fischleinbodenhütte car park. There, we parked and walked up to the Fondavalle refuge before taking trail 102, which leads to the Locatelli rifugio. It’s worth noting that the path just keeps going uphill for what felt like an eternity.

But the view once you reach the Rifugio Locatelli is breathtaking. The Tre Cime stand out against the sky like three fins. It’s magnificent. We had breakfast at the Rifugio Locatelli. Their walnut cake is very good. If it were up to me, I’d have stayed

at the rifugio to wait for lunch, but my boyfriend wanted to head back down and eat down below. I’d recommend stopping off and soaking up this view, which left me in awe. Bear in mind, though, that it’s quite cold up there. We had lunch at the Rifugio Fondovalle after what felt like a never-ending descent, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this place for lunch. I didn’t think the food was very good.

Jour 6 : lacs / Day 6: lakes

On our last day in the Dolomites, we spent a quiet day exploring several lakes. First, we stopped off at Lake Landro, where we had a picnic.

We then went back to spend part of the afternoon by Lake Dobbiaco, which we’d really enjoyed. Finally, at around 5.30 pm, we headed to Lake Braies. Between 9 am and 4 pm, you need to book a parking space in advance. But after 4 pm, there’s no need to book online. I’d therefore recommend going there early in the morning or late in the evening. There are several pay-and-display car parks. The closer you are to the lake, the more expensive the parking is. I think we parked at car park P2, where we paid €15, if I recall correctly. We then went for a walk around the lake, which takes about an hour and a half. The path is well-maintained and presents no difficulty. You can go for a swim if you wish. Lake Braies was probably the place I was mostly looking foward to because its photographs were what made me want to visit the Dolomites. In the end, I was weirdly not as marvelled as I expected to be even though it is undoubtedly beautiful. I was more charmed by Lago di Carezza. Nevertheless, Lago di Braies is quite majestic and is certainly worth the trip.

In the evening, we dine at Pizzeria Willy in Rasun di Sopra, a little village we stayed at. The pizzas were really good with a fluffy dough and excellent garnish.

This concludes this article about my trip in the Dolomites. I truly recommend travelling there as the landscapes are magnificent! I really loved it. I hope this article was useful and I'll see you later for new adventures!

L'Odyssée - The Odyssey

SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Calypso along the way.

MY THOUGHTS

Christopher Nolan gives us the finest interpretation of The Odyssey one could hope for. Watching this film, I finally understood why this story has stood the test of time. And yet I had read the work last year – a translation of it. And although I’d preferred The Odyssey to The Iliad – which I’d found profoundly boring – I hadn’t been moved by this tale, which I’d found a slog to read. In particular, I’d been surprised that scenes which seemed so clear in my mind were so lacking in detail, whilst other uninteresting parts dragged on. But in this film, Christopher Nolan restores the story to its full original power. For within this tale lies humanity – its brutality, its futile wars, its determination to be master of its own destiny which goes hand in hand with its fascination for the divine, its sacred values: loyalty, love and family. There is also, in this film and in this story, a profound reverence for wisdom that resonated with me and which, for me, reflects Christopher Nolan’s intelligence, much like that of his hero, Odysseus. This film is immensely powerful and sweeps us along with it. I particularly loved the opening scene with the bard paying tribute to those who ensured this legacy was passed down. The film is set against backdrops that are both wild and majestic, and is carried by charismatic actors who breathe emotional life into this epic. There is a touch of magic in this film. There is a touch of magic in this film. It speaks to the soul, thereby lending the story its full sense of transcendence. A perfect cinematic adaptation of a timeless odyssey.

SUMMARY

Tove Ditlevsen is today celebrated as one of the most important and unique voices in twentieth-century Danish literature, and The Copenhagen Trilogy (1969-71) is her acknowledged masterpiece. Childhood tells the story of a misfit child's single-minded determination to become a poet; Youth describes her early experiences of sex, work, and independence. Dependency picks up the story as the narrator embarks on the first of her four marriages and goes on to describe her horrible descent into drug addiction, enabled by her sinister, gaslighting doctor-husband.

MY THOUGHTS

The Copenhagen Trilogy is certainly an autobiography, but through Ditlevsen’s life we discover a whole cross-section of Danish society in the first half of the 20th century. Indeed, the writer was born in a working-class neighbourhood and, from a very young age, was confronted with social deprivation and its accompanying ills, such as prostitution, which she depicts with the innocence of the child she once was. Endowed with a poetic sensibility and an innate literary flair, Tove Ditlevsen always stood in stark contrast to the rough-and-ready environment in which she grew up. Her writing is deeply poetic, beautiful and imbued with acute sensitivity. It is also deeply sad. Indeed, this book exudes a painful melancholy and a profound sense of unease. Tove Ditlevsen’s life was never a happy one: she drifted from a poverty-stricken neighbourhood to troubled romantic relationships, eventually falling into the addiction that would haunt her until the end of her life. Despite her undeniable talent as a writer, Tove Ditlevsen never managed to pull herself out of it. Her account is all the more moving for it. It is the story of an intelligent yet fragile woman who never found her independence. As a social novel, The Copenhagen Trilogy is also significant for its portrayal of the condition of women in the early 20th century. Overall, I found this work striking and brilliantly written. I highly recommend it.

Benedetta - Paul Verhoeven

SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS

A 17th-century nun in Italy suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair.

MY THOUGHTS

Sometimes I just don’t get it. I can’t understand how a film can be so widely acclaimed. My view of Benedetta is that it is the cinematic realisation of a sick fantasy. This reinterpretation of the life of an Italian nun who is said to have had divine visions delves into the salacious rumours surrounding the legend of this woman. The result is a convent-set sapphic vision of deeply disturbing perversity. Furthermore, certain scenes are extremely violent. Moreover, the dialogue is jarringly anachronistic, with modern speech that I didn’t particularly appreciate in this 17th-century setting. The whole film made me feel uncomfortable without me finding any real relevance in it.

Projet dernière chance / Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir

SUMMARY

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.
Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.
Or does he?

MY THOUGHTS

I know my opinion is going to be very controversial, but I didn’t like this book at all. It felt like reading a poor imitation of Jules Verne, consisting mostly of pseudo-scientific jargon, without the beauty and flair of the French writer’s prose. I found the writing basic and uninspiring. In fact, I was thoroughly bored waiting for the author to move the story forward instead of providing us with endless pseudo-scientific explanations. As for the story itself, it struck me as lacking in originality and plausibility. What’s more, I didn’t connect with the character at all; in my view, they lacked depth. Project Hail Mary drags on with unnecessary length. In fact, I was thoroughly irritated by the pseudo-scientific gibberish, the validity of which is dubious and which takes precedence over the plot, the character’s psychology or even the suspense. In short, a huge disappointment.

Emily Wilde - Heather Fawcett

SUMMARY

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries

A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love in the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series.
Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party--or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people.
So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily's research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.
But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart.

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands

When mysterious faeries from other realms appear at her university, curmudgeonly professor Emily Wilde must uncover their secrets before it’s too late, in this heartwarming, enchanting second installment of the Emily Wilde series.
Emily Wilde is a genius scholar of faerie folklore who just wrote the world’s first comprehensive encyclopaedia of faeries. She’s learned many of the secrets of the Hidden Ones on her adventures . . . and also from her fellow scholar and former rival Wendell Bambleby.
Because Bambleby is more than infuriatingly charming. He’s an exiled faerie king on the run from his murderous mother and in search of a door back to his realm. And despite Emily’s feelings for Bambleby, she’s not ready to accept his proposal of marriage: Loving one of the Fair Folk comes with secrets and dangers.
She also has a new project to focus on: a map of the realms of faerie. While she is preparing her research, Bambleby lands her in trouble yet again, when assassins sent by his mother invade Cambridge. Now Bambleby and Emily are on another adventure, this time to the picturesque Austrian Alps, where Emily believes they may find the door to Bambleby’s realm and the key to freeing him from his family’s dark plans.
But with new relationships for the prickly Emily to navigate and dangerous Folk lurking in every forest and hollow, Emily must unravel the mysterious workings of faerie doors and of her own heart.

Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales

Emily Wilde has spent her life studying faeries. A renowned dryadologist, she has documented hundreds of species of Folk in her Encyclopaedia of Faeries. Now she is about to embark on her most dangerous academic project studying the inner workings of a faerie realm-as its queen.
Along with her former academic rival-now fiancé-the dashing and mercurial Wendell Bambleby, Emily is immediately thrust into the deadly intrigues of Faerie as the two of them seize the throne of Wendell's long-lost kingdom, which Emily finds a beautiful nightmare, filled with scholarly treasures.
Emily has been obsessed with faerie stories her entire life, but at first she feels as ill-suited to Faerie as she did to the mortal world-how could an unassuming scholar like herself pass for a queen? Yet there is little time to settle in-Wendell's murderous stepmother has placed a deadly curse upon the land before vanishing without a trace. It will take all of Wendell's magic-and Emily's knowledge of stories-to unravel the mystery before they lose everything they hold dear.

MY THOUGHTS

I had never read any fairy-tale fantasy before, apart from the books I read as a child. So I was immediately drawn to this trilogy, which struck me as thoroughly original. The story looked promising: a world where dryadology—the study of fairies—is a genuine academic discipline seemed fascinating, and the idea of following an academic on her magical adventures was thoroughly appealing. However, I was somewhat put off by the writing, which lacks fluidity, description, poetry and depth. Admittedly, the narrative is in the first person, as if it were the character’s diary, so we are confined to a single point of view. Nevertheless, I would have liked everything to have been developed with more finesse and detail.  I must admit, however, that I got carried away and read this trilogy right to the end. It is true that the characters are endearing, that the story is intriguing with a surprising vision of a magical world that is both folkloric and monstrous, and that there are some very interesting twists. One is left feeling a little unsatisfied, however.
