Résumé
En 1911, les grandes puissances vivent leurs
derniers instants d'insouciance. Bientôt la guerre
va déferler sur le monde... Cinq familles -
A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man’s world in the mining pits. . . . An American law student rejected in love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House. . . . A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy. . . . And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution.
An exciting novel that makes us travel back in time to the First World War since its premises to its conclusion with the signature of the treaty by Germany. This historic fresco is simply fascinating: we follow English, Welsh, German, Russian and American. This allows the writer to show different points of view which is very interesting. As they are both real and fictional characters, the reader can get attached to them and get completly immersed in the story. Therefore, this very documented novel is both instructive and pleasant: an historic novel interspersed with love intrigues. Although it's a massive book, it's a page-turner. The writing is flowing and captivating. The suspense makes the reader hold his breath. Indeed, although we know the outcome of the conflict, we don't know the characters' fate. I'm eager to read the second tome which is about World War II. To conclude, this book is a favourite. I advise it strongly!
