Synopsis

En 1916, le jeune officier britannique T. E. Lawrence est chargé d'enquêter sur les révoltes arabes contre l'occupant turc. Celui qu'on appellera plus tard "Lawrence d'Arabie" se range alors du côté des insurgés et, dans les dunes éternelles du désert, organise une guérilla. Personnage brillant mais controversé, il va mener des batailles aux côtés de ses alliés et changer la face d'un empire.

Ce que j'en ai pensé

Ce film s'inspire d'un personnage historique : T. E. Lawrence qui a joué un rôle important dans la révolte arabe. Ce jeune officier britannique est un homme cultivé, il a déjà accumulé beaucoup de connaissances sur le Moyen-Orient grâce à ses voyages et parle l'arabe. T.E. Lawrence a fait de l'archéologie avant d'être envoyé par le gouvernement britannique en mission de reconnaissance au Moyen-Orient suite au début de la première guerre mondiale. Là, il va se rapprocher du prince Fayçal et va mener la révolte arabe en coordonnant les différentes tribus.  

Le film Lawrence d'Arabie s'inspire de l'Histoire mais il ne lui est pas fidèle. Il s'agit avant tout d'un film épique et grandiose qui magnifie dans un premier temps le jeune officier britannique qui devient un personnage illustre suivi par les Arabes qui jusqu'alors étaient un peuple déchiré entre tribus. Nous découvrons un homme intelligent, déterminé, digne, doué d'une force morale hors du commun, diplomate et empathique. Toutes ces qualités vont lui permettre de rallier différentes tribus et de les mener au nom du prince Fayçal. Il sera suivi en particulier par Sherif Ali, le chef des Harith, un homme fataliste mais intelligent. Ensemble ils vont traverser le désert du Nefoud, une fournaise qui jusque-là avait rebuté toute velléité de traversée. Arrivé de l'autre côté, il réussira à rallier les Howeitat menés par Auda, une tribu voleuse et cupide. Leur but : Aqaba, une ville côtière sous domination turque. 

Dans la deuxième partie du film, T. E. Lawrence est ivre de sa gloire. Il se prend pour un prophète. Lui qui jusque-là avait horreur des massacres se transforme en fou sanguinaire lorsque son armée attaque une colonne turque. La guerre et la célébrité l'ont rendu fou, malade. Sherif Ali, toujours à ses côtés, s'inquiète pour lui. Entre les deux hommes est née une amitié indéfectible basée sur une admiration et un respect réciproques. Pourtant au départ, rien ne laissait présager qu'une amitié ait pu se tisser entre ces deux hommes. Cette amitié inventée est l'un des piliers et l'une des relations les plus intéressantes du film.  Dans la seconde partie du film, l'objectif de Lawrence est maintenant Damas qu'il souhaite donner aux Arabes. Lawrence est devenu au fil du film mi-Arabe, mi-britannique. Pourtant, il abandonnera le combat déçu par les Britanniques et les Français qui pensent peu aux intérêts des Arabes sinon aux leurs et également car sa santé mentale est en péril lui qui au départ semblait si droit, si fort. 

Au cours du film, Lawrence aura donc connu une ascension fulgurante jusqu'au statut de héros à la fois pour les Arabes et pour les Occidentaux. Puis, les épreuves, la guerre et son propre succès le feront progressivement descendre de son piédestal. L'humiliation qu'il subit infligée par les Turcs alors qu'il était en mission de reconnaissance déguisé en Arabe sera sans doute l'une des étapes décisives dans sa chute et dans son désir de se retirer. 

Ce film est donc une fresque grandiose qui nous montre la destinée romancée d'un homme qui est resté dans l'Histoire comme un héros de guerre. Un très grand film. 

Synopsis

The story of T.E. Lawrence the English officer who successfully united and lead the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks. 

My thought

 This film is inspired by a historical figure: T. E. Lawrence who played an important role in the Arab revolt. This young British officer is a cultivated man, he has already accumulated a lot of knowledge about the Middle East through his travels and speaks Arabic. T.E. Lawrence did archeology before being sent by the British government to a reconnaissance mission to the Middle East following the outbreak of the First World War. There he approached Prince Faisal and led the Arab revolt by coordinating the different tribes.The film Lawrence of Arabia is inspired by the History but it is not faithful to it. It is above all an epic and grandiose film that magnifies at first the young British officer who becomes an illustrious personage followed by the Arabs who until then were a people torn between tribes. We discover an intelligent man, determined, dignified, endowed with an extraordinary moral force, diplomatic and empathic. All these qualities will allow him to rally different tribes and lead them in the name of Prince Faisal. He will be followed in particular by Sherif Ali, the leader of the Harith, a fatalistic but intelligent man. Together they crossed the desert of Nefoud, a furnace which had discouraged any attempt to cross it. Arrived on the other side, he managed to rally the Howeitat led by Auda, a thieving and greedy tribe. Their goal: Aqaba, a coastal city under Turkish rule.In the second part of the film, T. E. Lawrence is drunk with his glory. He sees himself as a prophet. He who hitherto had a horror of massacres turns into a bloody fool when his army attacks a Turkish column. War and fame made him mad, ill. Sherif Ali, still at his side, is worried about him. Between the two men was born an unfailing friendship based on reciprocal admiration and respect. Yet at the outset, there was nothing to suggest that a friendship could be forged between these two men. This invented friendship is one of the pillars and one of the most interesting relationships of the film. In the second part of the film, Lawrence's goal is now Damascus, which he wants to give to the Arabs. Lawrence became over the film half-Arab, half-British . Yet he will abandon the struggle disappointed by the British and the French who think little of the interests of Arabs if not theirs and also because his mental health is in danger he who at the beginning seemed so right, so strong.During the film, Lawrence experienced a meteoric rise to the status of a hero for both the Arabs and the Westerners. Then, the trials, the war and his own success will gradually bring him down from his pedestal. The humiliation he suffered inflicted by the Turks while on a reconnaissance mission disguised as Arabic will undoubtedly be one of the decisive steps in his fall and his desire to withdraw.This film is a grandiose fresco that shows us the fictional destiny of a man who has remained in history as a hero of war. A very great movie.
