Le dilemme de ce livre est tout à fait fascinant : comment choisir entre son mari revenu d'entre les morts et son fiancé ? Taylor Jenkins Reid est une reine de la construction du récit et nous pose cette grande question dès les premières pages du livre avant de reprendre l'histoire du début c'est-à-dire de la rencontre de l'héroïne avec les deux hommes de sa vie. Tout le suspense de ce roman tient dans ce choix cornélien qui nous turlupine au fil des pages. Qui va-t-elle choisir ? Et nous ? Que ferions-nous à sa place ? J'ai trouvé la solution de l'écrivaine excellente et très sensée. Taylor Jenkins Reid l'amène avec finesse et sensibilité faisant évoluer son héroïne d'une façon très humaine et réaliste. Les deux relations amoureuses qui sont développées dans ce roman sont toutes deux très intéressantes et touchantes. L'ensemble forme un roman d'une grande cohérence et profondément bouleversant. Une petite pépite.

SUMMARY

In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.

On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?

Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

MY THOUGHTS

The dilemma at the heart of this book is utterly fascinating: how does one choose between a husband who has returned from the dead and one’s fiancé? Taylor Jenkins Reid is a master of narrative structure and poses this crucial question right from the very first pages of the book, before retracing the story from the beginning – that is, from the moment the heroine first meets the two men in her life. All the suspense in this novel lies in this agonising choice, which keeps us on tenterhooks as we turn the pages. Who will she choose? And what about us? What would we do in her place? I found the author’s resolution to be excellent and very sensible. Taylor Jenkins Reid handles it with finesse and sensitivity, allowing her heroine to develop in a very human and realistic way. The two romantic relationships explored in this novel are both deeply engaging and moving. Taken as a whole, the novel is highly coherent and profoundly heart-wrenching. A real gem.

Taylor Jenkins Reid a encore frappé. C'est le troisième roman que je lis de l'écrivaine et je ne peux qu'être épatée par sa capacité à donner la couleur, l'odeur, la texture, la force du réel à ses personnages. Dans ce livre, nous découvrons la vie de l'icône fictive qu'est Evelyn Hugo. Alors que celle-ci confie sa vie à une journaliste peu connue, nous nous fascinons pour cette figure décrite comme la femme la plus belle du monde, froidement calculatrice, prête à tout pour obtenir ce qu'elle veut. Evelyn Hugo se raconte, humaine, avec ses failles et ses travers. Les sept maris d'Evelyn Hugo c'est une histoire d'amour, de gloire et de chagrin. Le lecteur découvre la face cachée d'une star certes fictive mais qui fait sans doute écho à ces vies auréolées de succès dont on ne connaît que la façade. Un roman captivant qui se lit en quelques heures. L'écriture en elle-même n'a rien d'exceptionnel, ce qui fait tout son intérêt c'est son réalisme et son humanité.

MY THOUGHTS

Taylor Jenkins Reid has struck again. This is the third novel I've read by the writer and I can't help but be amazed by her ability to give the colour, the smell, the texture, the strength of reality to her characters. In this book, we discover the life of the fictional icon Evelyn Hugo. As she confides her life to a little-known journalist, we are fascinated by this figure described as the most beautiful woman in the world, coldly calculating, ready to do anything to get what she wants. Evelyn Hugo tells her story, and appears profundly human, with her flaws and her failings. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a story of love, glory and sorrow. The reader discovers the hidden face of a star who is certainly fictitious but who undoubtedly echoes those lives shrouded in success of which we only know the façade. A captivating novel that can be read in a few hours. The writing itself is not exceptional, what makes it interesting is its realism and humanity.

Sous la plume de Taylor Jenkins Reid, la famille Riva prend la couleur du réel. Ses personnages sont d'une humanité criante avec leurs talents et leurs failles. Dès les premières pages, nous sommes happés par le récit et plongés dans ce décor de soleil brûlant, de vagues écumantes et de longues plages.

Les sirènes de Malibu parle d'une fratrie, deux soeurs et deux frères, unis par la vie dans la souffrance, l'abandon et le deuil. Leur histoire est une histoire de résilience et d'amour fraternel solide et sincère. 

Profondément touchant, ce roman nous fait découvrir une famille, ses tourmentes, ses combats, ses épreuves, ses réussites et à travers Nina, Jay, Hud et Kit, c'est tout un apprentissage de la vie et de soi que l'on contemple. Les sirènes de Malibu se dévore en quelques heures. Il laisse un goût de sel et de nostalgie et allume une flamme en nous dont la lumière porte chaleur et amour.

MY THOUGHTS

Under Taylor Jenkins Reid, the Riva family becomes alive. Her characters feel real with all their talents and flaws. From the first pages, we hop into the narrative and dive in the foaming waves that wash upon the beaches burnt by the sun. Malibu Rising is about siblings, two sisters and two brothers, bonded by life in suffering, abandonment and grief. Their story is a story about resilience and a strong and sincere brotherly love. Deeply touching, this novel lets us discover a family, its struggles, its challenges but also its successes and through Nina, Jay, Hud et Kit, it's really a journey of learning life and yourself that we go on. Malibu Rising is the kind of book you read in a few hours. It leaves you a taste of salt and a yearning for true bonds. It also ligths a flame in us that carries both warmth and love.
