CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

Christopher Nolan nous livre la meilleure lecture de L'Odyssée que l'on puisse avoir. En regardant ce film, j'ai enfin compris pourquoi cette histoire a traversé les âges. J'avais pourtant lu l'an dernier l'œuvre. Une traduction en tout cas. Et bien que j'avais préféré L'Odyssée à l'Iliade que j'avais trouvé d'un ennui profond, je n'avais pas été touchée par ce récit dont j'avais trouvé la lecture rébarbative. J'avais notamment été étonnée que des scènes qui me semblaient si claires dans ma tête étaient aussi peu détaillées et que d'autres parties sans intérêt traînaient en longueur. Mais dans ce film, Christopher Nolan donne à l'histoire toute sa puissance originelle. Car dans ce récit, il y a l'humanité, sa brutalité, ses guerres vaines, sa volonté d'être maître de sa destinée qui va de pair avec sa fascination pour le divin et ses valeurs sacrées que sont la loyauté, l'amour et la famille. Il y a aussi dans ce film et dans cette histoire, une profonde révérence pour la sagesse qui m'a parlé et qui pour moi est le reflet de l'intelligence de Christopher Nolan à l'image de son héros, Ulysse. Ce film est d'une grande force et nous emporte avec lui. J'ai beaucoup aimé l'ouverture avec l'aède qui rend hommage à ceux qui permis que cet héritage soit transmis. Le film est porté par des lieux à la fois sauvages et majestueux et par des acteurs charismatiques qui donnent tout le souffle émotionnel à cette épopée. Il y a un peu de magie dans ce film. Il parle à l'âme et donne ainsi au récit toute sa transcendance. Une parfaite mise à l'écran d'une odyssée immémoriale.

MY THOUGHTS

Christopher Nolan gives us the finest interpretation of The Odyssey one could hope for. Watching this film, I finally understood why this story has stood the test of time. And yet I had read the work last year – a translation of it. And although I’d preferred The Odyssey to The Iliad – which I’d found profoundly boring – I hadn’t been moved by this tale, which I’d found a slog to read. In particular, I’d been surprised that scenes which seemed so clear in my mind were so lacking in detail, whilst other uninteresting parts dragged on. But in this film, Christopher Nolan restores the story to its full original power. For within this tale lies humanity – its brutality, its futile wars, its determination to be master of its own destiny which goes hand in hand with its fascination for the divine, its sacred values: loyalty, love and family. There is also, in this film and in this story, a profound reverence for wisdom that resonated with me and which, for me, reflects Christopher Nolan’s intelligence, much like that of his hero, Odysseus. This film is immensely powerful and sweeps us along with it. I particularly loved the opening scene with the bard paying tribute to those who ensured this legacy was passed down. The film is set against backdrops that are both wild and majestic, and is carried by charismatic actors who breathe emotional life into this epic. There is a touch of magic in this film. There is a touch of magic in this film. It speaks to the soul, thereby lending the story its full sense of transcendence. A perfect cinematic adaptation of a timeless odyssey.

Pour piloter ce dispositif, le gouvernement engage J. Robert Oppenheimer, brillant physicien, qui sera bientôt surnommé "le père de la bombe atomique". C’est dans le laboratoire ultra-secret de Los Alamos, au cœur du désert du Nouveau-Mexique, que le scientifique et son équipe mettent au point une arme révolutionnaire dont les conséquences, vertigineuses, continuent de peser sur le monde actuel…

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

J'ai vu ce film il y a quelques semaines à Paris dans un cinéma Pathé près de Montparnasse dans une salle Dolby cinéma. Je recommande fortement l'expérience de ce film dans une salle de ce genre avec des fauteuils inclinables et un son d'excellente qualité. 

Oppenheimer comme son nom l'indique raconte l'histoire du physicien à l'origine de la bombe atomique. Nous le suivons depuis ses études jusqu'à Los Alamos, cette ville laboratoire secrète, puis dans l'Après-Guerre où Oppenheimer devient une figure controversée et est mis à l'écart. 

En regardant ce film, j'ai découvert l'étendue de mon ignorance. En effet, j'avais peu de connaissance sur Oppenheimer. Alors même que nos livres d'histoire nous parlent du largage des bombes sur Hiroshima et Nagasaki qui a mis fin à la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, le personnage d'Oppenheimer reste peu connu. A la fois génie à l'esprit fulgurant et innovateur et être humain avec ses failles et ses doutes, Oppenheimer est pourtant une figure fascinante. Et l'histoire de la naissance de la bombe atomique nous renvoie à l'intelligence terrifiante de l'homme, à sa capacité de création et à son pouvoir de destruction. Ce biopic est à la fois le portrait d'un homme mais aussi celui d'une société, des liens entre politique et science, entre guerre et progrès. Ce film met en lumière les enjeux de cette période chaotique et périlleuse. Le tout porté par un visuel d'une beauté magnétique et un son immersif. Oppenheimer résonne profondément en nous et pose question encore aujourd'hui. Les trois heures de film s'écoulent sans que l'on n'en ait conscience tant la gravité des enjeux nous prend aux tripes bien que l'on en connaisse l'issue. Une fresque passionnante qui interpelle et hypnotise.

MY THOUGHTS

I saw this film a few weeks ago in Paris at a Pathé cinema near Montparnasse in a Dolby room. I highly recommend seeing this film in these conditions, with reclining seats and excellent sound quality. 

Oppenheimer, as its name suggests, tells the story of the physicist behind the atomic bomb. We follow him from his studies to Los Alamos, the secret laboratory town, and then into the post-war period where Oppenheimer becomes a controversial figure and is pushed aside. 

Watching this film, I discovered the extent of my ignorance. I knew very little about Oppenheimer. Even though our history books tell us about the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended the Second World War, little is known about Oppenheimer. Both a genius with a dazzling, innovative mind and a human being with his flaws and doubts, Oppenheimer is nevertheless a fascinating figure. And the story of the birth of the atomic bomb takes us back to men's terrifying intelligence, their capacity for creation and their power to destroy. This biopic is both a portrait of a man and a portrait of a society, of the links between politics and science, between war and progress. The film highlights the issues at stake during this chaotic and perilous period. All of this is supported by a magnetic visual beauty and immersive sound. Oppenheimer resonates deeply within us and still raises questions today. The three hours of film go by without you even realising it, the seriousness of what's at stake gripping you to the core, even though you know the outcome. An enthralling fresco that is engaging and mesmerizing.

Tenet - Christopher Nolan

 SYNOPSIS : TENET REALISE PAR CHRISTOPHER NOLAN

Muni d'un seul mot - Tenet - et décidé à se battre pour sauver le monde, notre protagoniste sillonne l'univers crépusculaire de l'espionnage international. Sa mission le projettera dans une dimension qui dépasse le temps. Pourtant, il ne s'agit pas d'un voyage dans le temps, mais d'un renversement temporel...

CRITIQUE 

J'avais énormément d'attentes pour ce film car j'adore les films de Christopher Nolan. Inception, Dunkerque, Memento, Interstellar, sa trilogie Batman, Le Prestige, ces films m'avaient complètement bluffée. Mais là, j'ai été immensément déçue. Pourquoi ? 

Pendant tout le film, j'ai désespérément attendu le moment où j'allais être happée par l'histoire mais cela n'est jamais arrivé. Je n'ai pas du tout accroché aux personnages. L'acteur principal manquait à mon sens singulièrement de charisme. Les liens entre les différents personnages étaient bancals. L'amitié qui aurait dû se tisser entre le personnage principal et le personnage de Robert Pattinson ne s'est jamais faite. De même que les liens entre le personnage principal et Katherine n'ont jamais réellement été noués. En parlant de celle-ci, j'ai trouvé que son personnage était vide et caricatural, la victime pathétique sous la coupe de son ordure de mari. En fait, ce qu'il manquait, ce sont les émotions, les liens émotionnels entre les différents personnages. Je n'ai rien ressenti pendant ce film. 

Bien-sûr, l'intérêt de ce long-métrage est dans le traitement des voyages dans le temps avec ce principe de l'entropie inversée qui permet à Nolan de superposer plusieurs dimensions temporelles d'une façon tout à fait originale. Notons que l'on reconnaît bien là le génie de ce réalisateur qui s'empare de la problématique du temps à sa manière et réussit l'exercice difficile de rendre tout cela sensé. Néanmoins, je trouve que le voyage dans le temps est une thématique vue et revue et bien que Nolan y mette sa touche personnelle, cela ne m'a pas transcendée. 

En fait, j'ai trouvé que ce film aboutissait à une sorte de James Bond raté avec un héros peu charismatique et des personnages peu attachants. 

Une autre chose m'a déçue : je m'attendais à de superbes images. Or, je n'ai pas du tout trouvé ce film beau.  

En définitive, un film cérébral certes par la complexité et l'intelligence de son scénario mais qui faillit à passionner et à faire vibrer son public.

REVIEW

I had huge expectations for this film because I adore Christopher Nolan's films. Inception, Dunkirk, Memento, Interstellar, his Batman trilogy, The Prestige, these films totally blew my mind. But this time, I was immensely disappointed. Why?

During the entire film, I desesperately waited the moment where I would be swept away by the story but it never happened. I never got attached to the characters. The principal actor was singularly lacking in charisma. The ties between the different characters didn't feel right. We never got to see what really bonded the principal character and who should have been his side-kick, the guy played by Robert Pattinson. And we could say the same thing about the principal character and Katherine. It's just assumed that he's trying to save her but there never is a story between them. Speaking of her, I thought she was really shallow and caricatural, the pathetic victim under the thumb of her vile husband. In fact, what was missing were the emotions, and the emotional links between the characters. I never felt anything during this film. 

Of course, what's interesting here is how travels in time are dealt with with this principle of reverse entropy that allows Nolan to overlay several temporal dimension in an original way. Let's give it to him that this is genius to seize the theme of time traveling and making it sound sensible. Nonetheless, I think that time traveling is way too seen and reviewed. And although Nolan gives it its own spin, it didn't transcend me. 

Actually, I thought this film ended up as kind of a failed James Bond with a hero who isn't charismatic and characters who aren't endearing. 

Another thing disappointed me: I was expecting beautiful photography. However, I didn't think this film was beautiful at all. 

Ultimately, it may be a cerebral film with the complexity and intelligence of its scenario but it totally fails to passionate its audience.
