SYNOPSIS

Une Américaine (Amanda) et une Anglaise (Iris), toutes deux déçues des hommes, décident, sans se connaître, d'échanger leurs appartements. Iris, va débarquer dans une demeure de rêve tandis que la distinguée Amanda découvre une petite maison de campagne sans prétentions. Les deux femmes pensent passer de paisibles vacances loin de la gent masculine, mais c'était sans compter l'arrivée du frère d'Iris dans la vie d'Amanda, et la rencontre de Miles pour Iris.

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

Quoi de mieux qu'une comédie romantique à regarder le jour de Noël ? L'histoire commence par deux déceptions amoureuses qui mènent Amanda et Iris à échanger leurs maisons. La première qui travaille dans la publicité pour le cinéma va se retrouver dans un petit cottage anglais sous la neige tandis que la deuxième, journaliste, découvre le luxe d'une splendide villa avec piscine à Los Angeles. J'ai détesté le fait que les deux femmes réagissent de façon complètement hystérique. A-t-on besoin de personnages féminins aussi niais ? Amanda et Iris sont vraiment des clichés, entre la bourreau du travail sans sentiment aux colères explosives qui vit dans le luxe et se retrouve démunie face à la vie à la campagne et la femme toujours prête à aider les autres même lorsqu'ils ne font que l'utiliser, qui se répand en sanglots. Cependant, j'ai beaucoup aimé les histoires d'amour qui se développent ensuite, amusantes, tendres. Je suis tombée sous le charme du personnage de Jude Law, tellement séduisant, attachant et finalement assez atypique. J'ai également beaucoup aimé l'amitié qu'Iris tisse avec l'un des voisins d'Amanda, un scénariste retraité. Il y a donc du bon et du mauvais dans cette comédie. Du très mauvais avec ces femmes qui réagissent de façon tout à fait loufoque, caricaturale et ridicule. Du bon, dans les ressorts amoureux assez attendus mais toujours plaisants ainsi que dans le personnage de Jude Law (non je ne dis pas ça juste parce qu'il est beau bien que j'avoue que ça y contribue). Du très bon dans le personnage d'Arthur, le vieux scénariste. Une comédie attendrissante passés les débuts gnangnans qui ne requiert pas trop de votre cerveau pour un après-midi de Noël tout en douceur.

MY THOUGHTS

What could be better than a romantic comedy to Watch on Christmas Day? The story begins with two disappointments in love that lead Amanda and Iris to exchange homes. The first who works in advertising for the cinema will find hereself in a small English cottage Under the snow while the second, journalist, discovers the luxury of a splendid villa with pool in Los Angeles. I hated the fact that bothe women react in a completely hysterical way. Do we need such silly female characters? Amanda and Iris are really clichés, between the insensitive workaholic with explosive anger who lives in luxury and finds hereself deprived in the face of life in the countryside and the woman always ready to help others even when they only use her and that often spreads in tears. Of course contrast between the two could have be fun but no need to be so caricatural. And could we get not so messed up female characters. However, I really liked the love stories that are going on after that which are quite fun and tender. I fell under the spell of the character of Jude Law, so seductive, endearing and quite atypical in fact. I also enjoyed the friendship that Iris forged with one of Amanda's Neighbors, a retired screenwriter. So there is good and bad in this comedy. Very bad with these women who react n a completely crazy, caricatural and ridiculous way. God, why are women depicted like emotional wrecks? Anyway, what's good here are the rather expected but always pleasant love stories as well as the character of Jude Law (no I Don't say that just because he is attractive, but let's admit that it contributes). Very good is the character of Arthur, the old scenarist who is very interesting. An endearing comedy past the ridiculous breakups of the beginning (and some ridiculous scènes along the way) that doesn't require much of your brain for a chill Christmas afternoon.

RESUME

Un Noël à la campagne dans le Gloucestershire. La perspective est séduisante pour un groupe de jeunes mondains, un peu las de la routine londonienne, qui décident de séjourner à proximité du domaine de Lady Bobbin et de ses enfants.

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

C'est la haute société anglaise des années 30 qui nous est dépeinte avec beaucoup d'ironie. Les personnages sont à mourir de rire entre l'écrivain pathétique qui se veut auteur torturé et incompris, la vieille noble fière, bien-pensante et guidée par son sens du devoir, le jeune noble d'Eton rebelle et indolent, sa sœur silencieuse et languissante, l'ancienne courtisane pleine de bon sens, le couple fraîchement parents au mari joueur malgré des problèmes d'argent. Tout ce petit monde se retrouve à la campagne le temps des vacances de Noël. C'est la collision entre esprit libéral parfois idéaliste du citadin et conservatisme d'habitants de la campagne attachés à leurs traditions et rebutés voire épouvantés par la nouveauté. J'ai trouvé ce récit follement drolatique car les personnages hautement prévisibles sont toutefois épris de grandes espérances irréalistes et sont d'une obstination extrême même quand ils ont tort. La théâtralité avec laquelle l'auteure met en scène ses personnages renforce le comique de la situation. J'ai beaucoup aimé que la voix de la raison soit celle d'une ex-prostituée, un pied de nez aux vieilles aristocrates bien pensantes. C'est un roman tout bonnement délicieux, très amusant avec cet humour anglais que j'affectionne tout particulièrement. Un roman au titre extrêmement bien choisi car ce récit de Noël se déguste comme un dessert avec tout l'esprit de tradition et le plaisir qui s'imposent. En effet, comment ne pas s'attacher aux caractères disparates de cette joyeuse compagnie ?

SUMMARY

An outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease may have terminated the hunting at the Compton Bobbins' in the Cotswolds, but it has not dampened the Yuletide spirit of the British Young Things who find themselves among the oddly assorted guests of the not-so young and quite formidable Lady Maria Bobbin. Hilarious misadventures abound as Lady Bobbin's serenely beautiful daughter, Philadelphia, meets the advances of the very eligible, and equally dull, Lord Lewis and of the charming but penniless Paul Fotheringay, whose terribly serious first novel has, to his dismay, just been hailed by critics as the funniest book of the year.

MY THOUGHTS

The English high society of the 30s is portrayed here with a lot of irony. The characters are to die of laughter between the pathetic writer who sees himself as a tortured and misunderstood author, the proud, well-meaning old noble guided by her sense of duty, the rebellious and indolent Young Eton's noble, his silent and languid sister, the old courtesan full of common sense, the freshly married couple who just gave birth to a baby while the father is a huge player even though they've got money problems. All these people are in the countryside during the Christmas holidays. It is the collision between the sometimes idealistic, liberal spirit of the city dweller and the conservatism of rural inhabitants who are attached to their traditions and are repeled, even frightened, by the novelty. I found this story madly funny because even though higly predictable, the characters have high unrealistic hopes and are extremely stubborn no matter how wrong they are. The theatricality with which the author stages her characters reinforces the comic of the situation. I loved that the voice of reason is that of an ex-prostitute, a snub to old aristocrats. This novel is simply delicious, very fun with this English humor that I'm particularly fond of. A novel whose title is extremely well chosen because this Christmas story is to enjoy like a dessert with all the spirit of tradition and the pleasure needed. Indeed how not to get attached to the disparate characters of this merry company?
