SYNOPSIS

Les sœurs Owens affrontent la sombre malédiction qui menace de détruire leur famille une fois pour toutes, dans un événement cinématographique mêlant divertissement, magie et chaos.

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

J'avoue avoir été déçue encore plus que ce à quoi je m'attendais. En effet, j'ai été frappée par le manque cruel d'authenticité de ce film. Il y a beaucoup beaucoup trop d'images de synthèse et tout fait faux sans parler des scènes romantiques d'une mièvrerie navrante (et pourtant Dieu sait que je suis particulièrement friande de scènes romantiques habituellement) et du visage botoxé des actrices principales (c'est véritablement dommage car je pense qu'elles seraient très belles sans et là on perd en expression). Ce que j'avais beaucoup aimé dans le premier film c'était son atmosphère nostalgique, cette vibe années 90 avec des effets spéciaux de l'époque. J'aurais largement préféré qu'on s'en tienne à cela. C'est dommage car il y avait de l'idée dans l'histoire qui certes est quelque peu répétitive mais avec des ingrédients qui fonctionnent : la sororité, l'amour familial, la lutte contre le pouvoir patriarcal. J'ai parfois été émue tout de même, je dois le reconnaître. Mais cela ne suffit pas à faire de ce film un grand film, loin de là. J'ai aimé retrouver l'univers mais il est tellement galvaudé que l'on en ressort quelque peu désabusé. Je m'en tiendrai dorénavant à la version originale.

MY THOUGHTS

I must admit I was even more disappointed than I’d expected. In fact, I was struck by the film’s glaring lack of authenticity. There’s far, far too much CGI and everything looks fake, not to mention the romantic scenes, which are painfully saccharine (and yet, God knows I’m usually particularly fond of romantic scenes), and the Botoxed faces of the leading ladies (it’s a real shame because I think they’d be very beautiful without it, and as it is, they lack expression). What I’d really liked about the first film was its nostalgic atmosphere, that 90s vibe with special effects from that era. I would have much preferred them to have stuck to that. It’s a shame because there was potential in the story – which, admittedly, is somewhat repetitive – but it had elements that work: sisterhood, family love, the struggle against patriarchal power. I must admit I was moved at times, all the same. But that’s not enough to make this a great film – far from it. I enjoyed revisiting the world, but it’s been so overused that you come away feeling a bit disillusioned. From now on, I’ll stick to the original version.

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

Les sorcières du phare est un roman choral qui fait parler à tour de rôle Olivia et deux de ses filles : Saphirre et Luna. Passé et présents se mêlent et les histoires se rejoignent peu à peu nous dévoilant petit à petit les clés du mystère de Lon Haven. L'intrigue est captivante et le suspense maîtrisé. La construction du récit est intelligente et surprenante. L'atmosphère de ce roman est également particulièrement réussie. Sombre à souhait, on se croirait sur la côte sauvage d'une île écossaise venteuse et pluvieuse. Carolyn Jess Cooke pioche dans la légende des changelins et crée les wieldlings, des créatures terrifiantes du fait du contraste entre leur apparence d'enfant et leur malfaisance. L'ensemble donne un roman fascinant à la trame complexe et intrigante, le tout dans une ambiance obscure et ensorcelante. L'écriture manquait peut-être par moment de fluidité et j'avoue avoir une préférence pour la narration omnisciente mais Les sorcières du phare est un très bon roman qui s'accorde parfaitement à cette période de l'année.

Children disappear, others appear... The line between legend and reality becomes blurred, and Olivia and her daughters find themselves embroiled in the dark events of Lon Haven. 

MY THOUGHTS

The lighthouse witches is a choral novel voicing one after the other Olivia and two of her daughters, Saphirre and Luna. Past and present intertwine and the stories gradually come together to reveal the keys to the mystery of Lon Haven. The story is captivating and the suspense well controlled. The story is cleverly constructed and surprising. The atmosphere of this novel is also particularly successful. Dark as can be, you feel like you're there on the wild coast of a windy, rainy Scottish island. Carolyn Jess Cooke draws on the legend of the changelings to create the wieldlings, terrifying creatures because of the contrast between their childlike appearance and their malevolence. The result is a fascinating novel with a complex and intriguing plot, all set in a dark and bewitching atmosphere. The writing may have lacked fluidity at times, and I confess to a preference for omniscient narration, but The lighthouse witches is a very good novel that fits in perfectly with this time of year.

RESUME

Sadie va devoir faire face aux émotions qu'elle a toujours refoulées et faire des choix difficiles.

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

Ce roman n'ayant pas été publié en français, je l'ai donc lu en anglais. Je l'avais acheté car il était vendu comme un croisement entre Practical Magic et Gilmore Girls. Pour ma part, je pense que l'intrigue tient plus de Practical Magic que de Gilmore Girls. En effet, je m'attendais à plus d'humour et d'atmosphère cozy. L'histoire est plus sombre que prévu mais bien contre-balancée par les recettes de cuisine qui clôturent chaque chapitre apportant ainsi une touche de douceur. Tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour une bonne lecture de début d'automne : magie, pâtisserie, famille, amour et malédictions. Rien d'extraordinaire mais c'est plaisant. Le livre parfait à lire pelotonnée dans le canapé sous un plaid alors qu'il pleut dehors avec une petite bougie qui crépite à côté. 

SUMMARY

When her childhood sweetheart returns to town and her grandmother tells her that she has terminal cancer, the quiet existence she has built for herself is threatened. Sadie has to face up to the emotions she has always repressed and make difficult choices.

MY THOUGHTS

This novel wasn't published in French, so I read it in English. I bought it because it was sold as a cross between Practical Magic and Gilmore Girls. Personally, I think the plot is more Practical Magic than Gilmore Girls. Indeed, I was expecting more humour and a cozy atmosphere. The story is darker than I expected, but the recipes at the end of each chapter add a touch of sweetness. All the ingredients are there for a good early autumn read: magic, baking, family, love and curses. Nothing extraordinary, but it's enjoyable. The perfect book to read curled up on the sofa under a blanket while it's raining outside, with a small candle crackling nearby.
