The Perfect Candidate, réalisé par /directed by Haifaa Al Mansour

CRITIQUE

Haifaa Al Mansour est la première femme réalisatrice saoudienne. Elle a notamment réalisé le film Wadjda (que j'ai rajouté à ma liste de films à voir et qui a reçu le prix de meilleur premier film international au festival de Vancouver en 2013) et Mary Shelley (que je vous recommande fortement). Haifaa Al Mansour est une féministe engagée et dans ses films, elle met en scène des personnages féminins forts. Maryam, l'héroïne du film The Perfect Candidate ne fait pas exception. 

Médecin dans une clinique d'une petite ville d'Arabie Saoudite, la jeune femme est quotidiennement confrontée au sexisme. Alors qu'elle souhaite rendre à Riyad afin de candidater pour un poste de chirurgienne dans un grand hôpital, elle se voit refuser de prendre l'avion. Son père, son tuteur légal, est absent et ne peut lui signer l'autorisation requise. En se démenant pour essayer de partir malgré tout, Maryam se retrouve candidate aux élections municipales. Etre une femme médecin célibataire en Arabie Saoudite n'est déjà pas simple, qui plus est lorsqu'elle se lance dans une campagne politique. 

Ainsi, nous suivons son parcours semé d'obstacles qu'elle affronte avec courage et détermination.

Le tout est porté par l'interprétation parfaitement juste de Mila Alzharani qui capture l'écran. Les dialogues sont percutants. Les personnages sont attachants. Et surtout, le message porté par ce film est puissant. Récit de l'émancipation des femmes saoudiennes, il met en avant les progrès accomplis mais également le chemin qu'il reste à parcourir. Haifaa Al Mansour nous parle non seulement de la condition féminine dans ce film mais aussi de la place de l'art dans la société saoudienne. L'art qui renaît. 

Un très beau film donc, intéressant et optimiste.

Haifaa Al Mansour is the first female Saudi director. She notably directed the films Wadjda (which I added to my list of films to see and which received the award for best international first film at the Vancouver festival in 2013) and Mary Shelley (which I highly recommend). Haifaa Al Mansour is a committed feminist and in her films she features strong female characters. Maryam, the heroine of The Perfect Candidate is no exception.

A doctor in a clinic in a small town in Saudi Arabia, the young woman is confronted with sexism on a daily basis. While she wishes to travel to Riyadh in order to apply for a post of surgeon in a large hospital, she is refused to take the plane. Her father, her legal guardian, is absent and cannot sign the required authorization. Trying to find a way to travel anyway, Maryam finds herself a candidate in the municipal elections. Being a single female doctor in Saudi Arabia isn't easy, especially when she embarks on a political campaign.

Thus, we follow her path strewn with obstacles that she faces with courage and determination.

Everything is carried by the perfec interpretation of Mila Alzharani who captures the screen. The dialogues are punchy. The characters are endearing. And above all, the message conveyed by this film is powerful. A story of the emancipation of Saudi women, it highlights the progress made but also the road that remains to be covered. Haifaa Al Mansour talks to us not only about the status of women in this film but also about the place of art in Saudi society. The reborn art.

A very beautiful film, therefore, meaningful and optimistic.
