RESUME
Islande, 1963, cent quatre-vingt mille habitants à peine, un prix Nobel de littérature, une base américaine, deux avions transatlantiques, voilà pour le décor. Hekla, vingt et un ans, emballe quelques affaires, sa machine à écrire, laisse derrière elle la ferme de ses parents et prend le car pour Reykjavik avec quatre manuscrits au fond de sa valise. Il est temps pour elle d'accomplir son destin ; elle sera écrivain.
Avec son prénom de volcan, Hekla bouillonne d'énergie créatrice, entraînant avec elle Isey, l'amie d'enfance qui s'évade par les mots : ceux qu'on dit et ceux qu'on ne dit pas, et son cher Jon John, qui rêve de stylisme entre deux campagnes de pêche.

Quelle est la place d'une femme écrivain dans le monde des années 60 ? Quelle est la place d'un homosexuel dans les années 60 ? "Certes, il n'y a pas de place en ce monde pour un homosexuel, Hekla, mais il y a de la place pour une femme qui écrit." Hekla est la narratrice de ce roman. La jeune femme quitte sa campagne natale pour la capitale islandaise Reykjavik à la recherche d'un travail qui lui permettra de passer son temps libre à écrire. Elle y rejoint là son meilleur ami, DJ Johnsson qui est homosexuel. Dans cette Islande des années 60, on préférerait qu'Hekla soit miss Islande et que DJ Johnsson se marie (à une femme). Hekla et DJ Johnsson vont pourtant en quête d'un autre destin pour eux-mêmes. Le roman suit majoritairement la vie d'Hekla émaillée d'interactions avec d'autres personnages tels qu'Isey sa meilleure amie, mariée et mère qui écrit en cachette et craint d'être destinée à avoir une famille nombreuse. Il me semble qu'Isey et Hekla se ressemblent mais alors qu'Isey est tombée enceinte jeune et résignée par la force du destin à son rôle de mère, Hekla jouit de son indépendance comme si elle portait en elle une liberté naturelle et se joue du destin. Hekla, à l'image de son prénom qui est celui d'un volcan, est une source d'énergie surprenante et insaisissable. "Le poète" comme elle l'appelle avec qui elle chemine un moment est complètement éclipsé par la lumière qu'Hekla porte en elle.
L'histoire d'Hekla est portée par la prose puissante d'Audur Ava Olafsdottir. Chaque phrase est un joyau qui recèle en elle bien plus de pouvoir qu'elle semble en avoir au premier abord. Les phrases sont simples mais sonnent tellement juste qu'elles sont profondément touchantes. Le roman, à la première personne, nous plonge dans l'intimité d'Hekla. Pourtant, il y a une sorte de détachement diffus dans la façon dont Hekla nous décrit le monde qu'elle voit, détachement que l'on retrouve dans les autres romans de l'écrivaine. Chaque page donne l'impression de révéler un immense secret mais en même temps, il semble qu'une part de ce secret reste à jamais sous un voile brumeux qui lui donne des contours flous. Nous voyons ce qu'Hekla voit mais nous ne savons pas ce qu'elle ressent. Cette façon de raconter est étonnante car elle suggère les sentiments sans les dévoiler tout à fait. Je trouve que cela apporte une puissance étonnante à la prose et stimule notre imagination et nos émotions.
Il y a beaucoup de poésie dans les mots d'Audur Ava Olafsdottir. Elle magnifie le banal et lui donne une pureté et un sens profond. C'est beau. C'est immensément beau. De plus, ce roman porte un message féministe avec cette héroïne, femme écrivain indomptée par les hommes ni par cet homme qui ne cesse d'essayer de la convaincre de participer au concours de Miss Islande, ni par ce poète qui aurait aimé qu'elle puisse être une femme docile, bonne ménagère et bonne cuisinière, qui l'admire et qui la jalouse car elle est tout ce que lui voudrait être alors même qu'il est l'homme et elle, la femme. Il y a aussi l'homosexualité, abordée dans ce livre par le biais du personnage émouvant de DJ Johnsson, un homme sensible, mélancolique qui aspire à une vie où il ne devrait pas se cacher, où ce serait normal d'être comme il est. Ce roman porte un profond message sur l'acceptation de soi et de l'autre, sur l'égalité et le respect qui résonne encore aujourd'hui.
Après avoir lu Les quatre filles du Dr March en début d'année, le personnage d'Hekla me fait immanquablement penser au personnage de Jo. C'est comme si mes lectures m'annonçaient une année 2020 d'écriture, d'indépendance et de féminisme.
Miss Islande est une perle sublime qui s'ajoute au trésor que sont les romans d'Audur Ava Olafsdottir. Sa prose toute en finesse et en subtilité ne cesse de m'émerveiller. Cette femme est l'une de mes écrivains préférés et je vous recommande vivement de lire ce roman comme tous les autres qu'elle a écrits.

SUMMARY
Iceland in the 1960s. Hekla is a budding female novelist who was born in the remote district of Dalir. After packing her few belongings, including James Joyces's Ulysses and a Remington typewriter, she heads for Reykjavik with a manuscript buried in her bags. There, she intends to become a writer. Sharing an apartment with her childhood and queer friend Jon John, Hekla comes to learn that she will have to stand alone in a small male dominated community that would rather see her win a pageant than be a professional artist. As the two friends find themselves increasingly on the outside, their bond shapes and strengthens them artistically in the most loving of ways.
MY THOUGHTS
What is the place of a woman writer in the world of the 60s? What is the place of a homosexual in the 60s? "Yes, there is no place in this world for a homosexual, Hekla, but there is room for a woman who writes." Hekla is the narrator of this novel. The young woman leaves her native countryside for the icelandic capital Reykjavik in search of a job that will allow her to spend her free time writing. There she joins her best friend, DJ Johnsson, who is a homosexual. In this Iceland of the 60s, one would prefer that Hekla be miss Iceland and that DJ Johnsson marry (to a woman). Hekla and DJ Johnsson are looking for another destiny for themselves. The novel mostly follows the life of Hekla enamelled with interactions with other characters such as Iseyn her best friend, married and mother who writes in secret and fears to be destined to have a large family. It seems to me that Isey and Hekla look alike but while Isey became pregnant young and resigned by the force of destiny to her role as a mother, Hekla enjoys her independence as if she carried within her a natural freedom and she plays with destiny. Hekla, like the volcano she was named after, is a surprising and elusive source of energy. "The poet" as she calls him who she is with, for a moment is completely eclipsed by the light that Hekla carries in her.
Hekla's story is carried by the powerful prose of Audur Ava Olafsdottir. Each sentence is a jewel that holds much more power in it that it seems to have at first sight. The sentences are simple but sound so right that they are deeply touching. The novel, in the first person, plunges us into Hekla's intimacy. Yet there is a sort of diffuse detachment in the way Hekla describes the world she sees, detachment that is found in the writer's other novels. Each page gives the impression of revealing a huge secret but at the same time it seems that part of this secret remains forever under a misty veil that gives it fuzzy contours. We see what Hekla sees but we don't know how she feels. This way of telling the story is amazing because it suggests feelings without revealing them completely. I find it brings amazing power to prose and stimulates our imagination and emotions.
There is much poetry in the words of Audur Ava Olafsdottir. She magnifies the banal and gives it a purity and a deep meaning. It is beautiful. It is immensely beautiful. In addition, this novel carries a feminist message with this heroine, a woman writer who is indomitable by men, neither by this man who keeps trying to convince her to take part in this Miss Iceland contest, nor by this poet who would have liked her to be a docile woman, a good housewife and a good cook. He can just admire her and be jealous of her as she is all he wished to be although she is a woman. There is also homosexuality, addressed in this book through the moving character of DJ Johnsson, a sensitive, melancholic man who aspires to a life where he would not have to hide, where it would be normal to be as he is. This novel carries a profound message about acceptance of self and of the other, about equality and respect that still resonates today.
After reading Little Women earlier this year, the character of Hekla makes me think of the character of Jo. It i as if my readings announced a year 2020 of writing, independence and feminism. Miss Iceland is a sublime pearl that adds to the treasure that are the novels of Audur Ava Olafsdottir. Her prose all in finesse and subtlety never ceases to amaze me. This woman is one of my favorite writers and I urge you to read this novel like all the others she has written.
