La tatoueuse de Jaipur / The Henna Artist - Alka Joshi

RESUME

Lakshmi s'est libérée du joug de son mari et s'est installée à Jaipur. Ses magnifiques dessins au henné et ses connaissances en plantes médicinales lui ouvrent les portes de la haute société de la ville. Son existence se retrouve bouleversée par l'irruption de sa sœur cadette, Radha, une fillette naïve, insolente qui menace soudainement la vie durement gagnée de Lakshmi. 

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

Le personnage de Lakshmi est selon moi, la force de ce roman. J'ai été fascinée par cette femme courageuse et intelligente qui se bat pour son indépendance. J'ai beaucoup apprécié son côté artiste et guérisseuse également. Sa sœur, par contre, m'a beaucoup irritée. J'ai notamment peu apprécié l'ingratitude de Radha envers sa sœur aînée et sa naïveté. Néanmoins, l'histoire n'en perd pas de son intérêt. Alka Joshi recrée pour nous un pays qui stimule les sens avec ses plats savoureux, ses odeurs épicées, ses couleurs vives. L'écriture est simple, un peu trop simple d'ailleurs. Il manque la poésie des mots qui rendrait ce roman inoubliable de mon point de vue. Il reste que La tatoueuse de Jaipur est un roman très agréable à lire, porté par un personnage féminin fort et qui nous fait voyager. 

SUMMARY

Lakshmi freed herself from the yoke of her husband and moved to Jaipur. There, her wonderful henna designs and her knowledge of medicinal plants opened her the doors of the town high society. Her life is turned upside down by the arrival of her younger sister from which she had never heard of before. Radha, a naive and insolent little girl, threatens Lakshmi's hardly earned quiet and independant life.

MY THOUGHTS

According to me, Lakshmi's character is the real strenght of this novel. I was fascinated by this courageous and intelligent woman fighting for her independance. I really enjoyed her artistic side and her talents as a healer. On the other hand, I found her sister very irritating. In particular, I didn't like how ungrateful she behaved towards Lakshmi and I found unbelievable how naive she was. Nonetheless, the story is still interesting. Alka Joshi recreates the atmosphere of a country that stimulates the senses with its tasty dishes, its spicy odors and its bright colours. The writing is simple, maybe a little too simple. I felt like this novel lacked the poetry that would make it truly remarkable. The fact remains that The Henna Artist is a very pleasant novel to read, lead by a strong feminine character and that makes us travel.
