RESUME

Par un froid après-midi de décembre, Sam repère Sadie sur le quai du métro parmi la foule. Ils ne se sont pas vus depuis des années, mais jamais ils n’ont oublié leur première rencontre, à l’hôpital. Sam se remettait d’un accident, Sadie venait voir sa sœur malade, et ces deux enfants passionnés de jeux vidéo se sont mis à refaire le monde.

À présent étudiants, c’est un univers virtuel que les deux amis vont inventer et qui va les propulser au sommet : leur première création, Ichigo, est un blockbuster. Du jour au lendemain, ils deviennent des stars. Ils n’ont pas encore vingt-cinq ans et ils sont brillants, riches et célèbres. Mais le succès n’empêchera pas le piège de l’ambition et de la jalousie de se refermer sur eux...

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

Je n'avais pas particulièrement d'attente pour ce livre et j'ai été bluffée. C'est le genre de roman qui nous reste en tête longtemps après qu'on l'a terminé. Tout d'abord, la construction du récit est étonnante. La chronologie est déstructurée, chaque chapitre semble avoir son identité propre. Un peu comme s'il s'agissait d'un jeu à multiples niveaux interconnectés. Car Demain, demain et demain c'est aussi une histoire de jeu vidéo mais j'ai plutôt envie d'utiliser le mot création. En effet, c'est cela qui m'a marquée et beaucoup plu : le fait que ce roman aborde le processus de création. J'ai trouvé cela tout à fait fascinant d'autant que le roman est parsemé d'idées aussi géniales les unes que les autres. Mais surtout ce qui touche en plein cœur, ce sont les personnages et leur humanité. Gabrielle Zevin tisse au fil de l'histoire le réseau de leurs relations car finalement, les deux grands thèmes de ce livre sont l'amitié et l'amour. Sam et Sadie sont imparfaits et profondément touchants. Il est facile de s'identifier à eux. Par ailleurs, j'ai trouvé que leurs personnages étaient magnifiquement complémentés et équilibrés par le personnage de Marx. L'écriture de Gabrielle Zevin recèle une puissance et une vérité acérées. C'est beau et bouleversant. Un roman brillant. 

SUMMARY

On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn't heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won't protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts.

MY THOUGHTS

I didn't have any expectation for this book and I was blown away. It's the kind of novel that stays with you long after you've finished it. First of all, the construction of the story is surprising. The chronology is unstructured, and each chapter seems to have its own identity. It's a bit like playing a game with multiple interconnected levels. It's quite interesting because Tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow is also a story about video games, but I'd rather talk more generally about creation. In fact, that's what struck me and what I really liked: the fact that this novel deals with the creative process. I found this utterly fascinating, especially as the novel is full of brilliant ideas. But above all, what really touches you are the characters and their humanity. As the story unfolds, Gabrielle Zevin weaves together the web of their relationships, because in the end, the two great themes of this book are friendship and love. Sam and Sadie are flawed and deeply touching. It's easy to identify with them. I also found their characters beautifully complemented and balanced by the character of Marx. Gabrielle Zevin's writing is powerful and true. It is beautiful and moving.  A brilliant novel.
