RESUME

Athènes, milieu des années 1940. Récemment libérée de l’occupation allemande, la Grèce fait face à de violentes tensions internes. Confrontée aux injustices qui touchent ses proches, la jeune Themis décide de s’engager auprès des communistes et se révèle prête à tout, même à donner sa vie, au nom de la liberté. Arrêtée et envoyée sur l’île de Makronissos, véritable prison à ciel ouvert, Themis rencontre une autre femme, militante tout comme elle, avec qui elle noue une étroite amitié. Lorsque cette dernière est condamnée à mort, Themis prend une décision qui la hantera pendant des années.

Au crépuscule de sa vie, elle lève enfin le voile sur ce passé tourmenté, consciente qu’il faut parfois rouvrir certaines blessures pour guérir…

CE QUE J'EN AI PENSE

Ceux qu'on aime nous raconte l'histoire de Themis et de sa famille et à travers eux, l'histoire de la Grèce des prémices de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale à nos jours. Fresque familiale, ce roman utilise les antagonismes au sein d'une fratrie pour illustrer les divisions nées au cœur du peuple grec et qui ont déchiré le pays durant la seconde moitié du XXème siècle. Je ne connaissais pas du tout l'histoire récente de la Grèce et j'ai trouvé ce récit aussi passionnant qu'effroyable. En effet, les événements qu'il raconte sont terribles. Je ne m'expliquerai jamais la cruauté dont peut faire montre l'être humain quand il s'agit d'imposer ses idéaux. Comment un peuple qui a pourtant déjà grandement souffert de l'occupation allemande et de la famine peut-il s'entre-déchirer entre communisme et royalisme ? Vaste question sans réponse. Néanmoins, j'ai admiré tout le travail de recherche mené par Victoria Hislop pour nous retranscrire les événements et sa capacité à créer une fiction historique qui sonne juste et qui reste neutre. Les personnages sont criants d'humanité et d'authenticité. Il s'agit d'une histoire puissante qui ne laisse pas insensible et son historicité la rend d'autant plus intéressante. L'écriture est fluide et c'est un roman que l'on a du mal à lâcher avant la fin. En résumé, un livre extrêmement bien réussi aux couleurs vraies qui nous dévoile un pan sombre de l'Histoire. 

SUMMARY

Athens 1941. After decades of political uncertainty, Greece is polarised between Right- and Left-wing views when the Germans invade.

Fifteen-year-old Themis comes from a family divided by these political differences. The Nazi occupation deepens the fault-lines between those she loves just as it reduces Greece to destitution. She watches friends die in the ensuing famine and is moved to commit acts of resistance.

In the civil war that follows the end of the occupation, Themis joins the Communist army, where she experiences the extremes of love and hatred and the paradoxes presented by a war in which Greek fights Greek.

Eventually imprisoned on the infamous islands of exile, Makronisos and then Trikeri, Themis encounters another prisoner whose life will entwine with her own in ways neither can foresee. And finds she must weigh her principles against her desire to escape and live.

As she looks back on her life, Themis realises how tightly the personal and political can become entangled. While some wounds heal, others deepen.

MY THOUGHTS

Those Who Are Loved tells the story of Themis and her family, and through them, the history of Greece, from the beginnings of the Second World War to the present day. A family fresco, this novel uses the antagonisms in between siblings to illustrate the divisions born at the heart of the Greek people and which tore the country apart in the second half of the twentieth century. I was completely unfamiliar with Greece's recent history and found this story as fascinating as it was horrifying. Indeed, the events it recounts are terrible. I will never be able to explain to myself the cruelty that human beings can show when it comes to imposing their ideals. How can people who have already suffered so much from German occupation and famine tear each other apart over communism and royalism? It's a big question and one that's impossible to answer. Nevertheless, I admired Victoria Hislop's research into the events and her ability to create historical fiction that rings true and remains neutral. The characters are truly human and feel authentic. It's a powerful story that leaves no one indifferent, and its historicity makes it all the more interesting. The writing is fluid and it's a novel that's hard to put down until the end. All in all, an extremely well written book that reveals a dark part of history.
