Le chant d'Achille / The song of Achilles - Madeline Miller

SUMMARY

Achilles, "the best of all the Greeks," son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful, irresistible to all who meet him. Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods' wrath.
They are trained by the centaur Chiron in the arts of war and medicine, but when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.

MY THOUGHTS

Madeline Miller tells us the legend of the Greek hero Achilles and his companion Patroclus. The result is an enthralling novel. It's been a while since I read a book that I couldn't put down. The writing is beautiful, fluid and full of sensitivity. The characters are very touching, portrayed with true psychological finesse. I knew little about this episode in Greek mythology and was delighted to discover it through the eyes of Madeline Miller. I've always loved ancient Greece and this novel will delight all fans of the period. But this story is also a universal tale about the failings of humanity, but also about its strengths, which will appeal to everyone. Indeed, The song of Achilles is also a magnificent love story. The relationship between Patroclus and Achilles is as imperfect as any couple's, but the tenderness and loyalty that bind them together are unfailing. Madeline Miller delivers a novel that brilliantly blends mythology, romance and tragedy. As much as I was disappointed by Circe, I was captivated by the power of The song of Achilles.

Persephone & Hades A touch of Darkness - Scarlett St. Clair

SUMMARY

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring by title only. The truth is, since she was a little girl, flowers have shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hopes to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist.
Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible.
After a chance encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead and the terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever.
The bet does more than expose Persephone’s failure as a Goddess, however. As she struggles to sow the seeds of her freedom, love for the God of the Dead grows—and it’s forbidden.

MY THOUGHTS

This novel was promising. A contemporary take on the myth of Hades and Persephone sounded appealing. Unfortunately, I found that it fell into the fantasy of the romance between the powerful bad boy and the naive young girl. In my opinion, this novel encourages toxic relationships, which is why I didn't like it. Hades manipulates Persephone and the book seems to try to justify the relevance of their story by fate or by trying to give Persephone a hold over the God of the Dead but this is clearly illusory. It's a shame, because there's the potential for some very fine writing here. You can feel Scarlett St. Clair's ability to use words to create atmosphere, but this quality of writing has been sidelined in favour of Persephone's point of view, that of a young woman with a candid look on the world. I was therefore disappointed by this book, which had great potential but where the writer's talent was hampered by the unhealthy passion between the Machiavellian Hades and the ingenuous Persephone, even though there is an attempt to show the hidden goodness of the God of the Underworld and the attempts at rebellion by the Goddess of Spring. Unfortunately, A Touch of Darkness falls into cliché, and that's a shame.

SUMMARY

The great Norse myths are woven into the fabric of our storytelling - from Tolkien, Alan Garner and Rosemary Sutcliff to Game of Thrones and Marvel comics. They are also an inspiration for Neil Gaiman's own award-bedcked, bestselling fiction. Now he reaches back through time to the original source stories in a thrilling and vivid rendition of the great Norse tales. Gaiman's gods are thoroughly alive on the page - irascible, visceral, playful, passionate - and the tales carry us from the beginning of everything to Ragnarök and the twilight of the gods. Galvanised by Gaiman's prose, Thor, Loki, Odin and Freya are irresistible forces for modern readers and the crackling, brilliant writing demands to be read aloud around an open fire on a freezing, starlit night.

REVIEW

That book was on my list to read for a long time. Since I've been watching Viking, the TV show lately, I thought it was the perfect time to dive in the Viking mythology. I don't think I've ever read Nordic stories or maybe when I was little. But I've always been fascinated by the viking civilization. In fact, I am fascinated by all civilizations and I am passionate about history. I love mythologies. I always find it incredible to read these stories that still reach us today, centuries from when they were born, witnesses to the spirituality and beliefs of the peoples of that time.
Neil Gaiman gathers here the Nordic myths and tells them to us with his enchanting pen that takes us on a journey to the nine worlds. The stories are wonderful, funny and leave us dreamy. The book is too short for my taste. I wish I could have stayed longer alongside the Nordic Gods, getting to know them better, discovering the secondary deities. Thus, this book is a Pleasant gateway into the universe of Nordic mythology. And now, my only desire is to find other stories about the adventures of the Viking's gods.
